On February 3rd, the District North Chess Trials took place, where fifteen of our top Stellenberg chess players participated. From this talented group, seven players qualified for the Cape Town Metro Schools Chess Closed Individuals, held on March 2nd and 3rd at Wynberg Boys High School. The students performed exceptionally well, and six qualified to partake in the Western Cape Individual Chess Trials in Genadendal during the March holidays.
Six of our learners were members of the Western Province (Cape Town Metro) Schools Chess Team which competed in the Western Cape Schools Chess Trials (provincial trials) on 21 and 22 March in Genadendal against selected teams from Cape Winelands, Overberg, West Coast, and Eden. These learners were awarded Western Province (regional) Schools Colours for chess.
Notably, Jessika Woolf was selected to represent WP in the Western Cape Inter-Regional Championships held on March 23rd and 24th in Caledon.
We began our league games as the second term commenced. We had an outstanding season, with both our teams finishing first in their league, subsequently advancing to the District North Top Schools. At the District North Top Schools, our U/15 team secured second place in their age group, while our U/18 team finished first. This qualified them for the Western Cape Top Schools competition in Oudtshoorn.
The journey with our U/18 team to Oudtshoorn was exciting, filled with two long days of intense chess matches. Together with Paul Roos, our U/18 team achieved second place in the Western Cape. Paul Vorster was recognized as the best board 2 player, while Darren van Staaden received accolades for being the best board 4 player.
Overall, it has been a delightful year for chess!
