GRUNGE COUTURE
Each year the Design Department presents a fashion show that consists of garments and fashion accessories made from recycleable materials. The fashion show is presented by the learners who chose Design as a subject, but is also open to anybody with a keen interest in design.

FOTOGRAFIE
The photo club started a number of years ago and was handed over by the founding teacher to Mrs Kingma who took the club to new heights till 2024.
We have bi-termly meetings which include a photo competition judged by an external guest photographer. Our learners then go on to enter the Tygerberg and International Eisteddfods respectively.
Learners can develop this skill which is not only a recognised art form but also one of the most lucrative means of creating in the modern world of digital content.
We host photography workshops to constantly stay up to date with new developments in the field. Learners use their own cameras or cell phones and we meet in our school’s beautiful iHub.
uitvoerende kunste
Uitvoerende kunste sluit alle kunsvorme in waar leerders deelneem aan aktiwiteite waar hulle op die verhoog optree. Stellenberg High School offers a wide range of performing arts activities, some of which allow learners to compete against other schools or groups, and others which are purely for enjoyement and skills development.
PLAYFEST
Die Stellenberg Hoërskool se Playfest is ‘n jarelange tradisie wat uitstaande toneelstukke, uitsluitlik deur die leerders geskryf en aangebied, opgelewer het. Learners receive an opportunity to write their own plays, host auditions and direct. At a gala event, the community and parents are invited to see these top plays. Toekennings word gemaak vir die Beste Teks, Beste Aktuers, Regie en Tegniese Aspekte. Dit is beslis ‘n jaarlikse hoogtepunt op die Stellenberg Kultuurkalender.

AFRIKAANSE TONEEL
“Theatre was created to tell the truth about life!”
Elke jaar verras die Afrikaanse toneelgroep ons met hul kreatiwiteit, talent en interessante tekste. Hierdie jaar was geen uitsondering nie. “Kisduiwels” (geskryf deur Theo Kleynhans) spreek tot elke hoërskoolleerder, veral dié was al moes detensie sit! Vanjaar het ons aan drie kompetisies deelgeneem: The Playhouse Festival, Montagu Jeugkunstefees en ’n nuwe nasionale jeugkunstefees, Aardklop Pronk Podium.
Ons het baie goed presteer by al die feeste, maar moet veral die Montagufees uitlig. Hier het ons toneelgroep uitgeblink met dubbelgoud (90+%) vir al die akteurs en goud (80+%) vir die teks, regie, tegnies en verhoogbestuur. Ons is veral trots op ons twee trofeewenners: Delané Potgieter vir beste aktrise en Kaylen Ferreira vir beste ondersteunende aktrise.
DRAMAKLUB
Stellenberg se dramaklub se spreekwoordelike deure “staan oop” vir enige leerder wat in drama en verhoogwerk belangstel. Weekly classes are presented by creative and performing art staff and includes developing acting, vocal and movement skills. Although the main focus is fun, entering polished items for the local eisteddfod is possible. Ons woon ook gereeld professionele produksies (toneelstukke of musiekblyspele) by.
STELLIES GOT TALENT
The final round of StelliesGotTalent, our annual talent competition took place on 9 April. The eight finalists were chosen from the almost 30 entries that were received and competed for the title of StelliesGotTalent Winner 2024.
Die deelnemers het ‘n groot verskeidenheid van talente vertoon en ons is deur solosangers, ‘n sangtrio, dansers, ‘n violis en ‘n slagkletser (beatboxer) vermaak. Die standaard van die deelnemers was hierdie jaar besonder hoog en die beoordelaars het ‘n moeilike taak gehad om die uiteindelike wenner te kies.

Musiek is ‘n kardinale deel van Hoërskool Stellenberg se Kultuurprogram. Leerders kan individuele musieklesse neem vir ‘n verskeidenheid instrumente wat houtblaas-, koperblaas- en snaarinstrumente insluit.

Acoustic and electric guitar lessons, drumkit lessons and contemporary and classical voice lessons are also offered at our music department. Our department has many successes and often produce prize winners at eisteddfods, local and national music competitions, and external music exams. The school orchestra consists of wind and string instruments, keyboard players and a percussion section. Still in its early years, the orchestra is growing each year and has already achieved an excellent performance standard. Stellenberg High School’s junior and senior marimba bands always trigger involuntary dance movements when they perform in public. Lead by Mr Francois le Roux, the band’s ever-increasing repertoire speaks to one and all. Redevoering

Hoërskool Stellenberg het ‘n nasionale reputasie as dit kom by die kwaliteit van leerders wat die kuns van redevoering betref. Leerders wat hierdie kuns in Afrikaans beofen kan aansluit by die Debat spanne of die Redenaars groepe en deelneem aan die voorste kompetisies in die land. For learners who wishes to participate in the art of oration, we have clubs for English Rotary Debating and Public Speaking.
DEBAT AFRIKAANS
Daar is ‘n groeiende getal ywerige en talentvolle debatteerders in ons skool, wat elke jaar die geleentheid ontvang om aan ‘n verskeidenheid debatkompetisies deel te neem: die ATKV se NASIONALE DEBATKOMPETISIE, die CON SPIRITO NASIONALE DEBATKOMPETISIE, die NASIONALE DINK OF SINK DEBATKOMPETISIE, die TAALMONUMENT DEBATKOMPETISIE, asook die Paul Roos Gimnasium se Onvoorbereide Debatkompetisie. Op 15 Augustus het Daniel Green, SJ van der Merwe en Joubert Barkhuizen by Klein Kariba in Bela-Bela aan die landsfinaal van die ATKV-debatkompetisie deelgeneem.
We are incredibly proud of the Stellenberg junior debating team and how they represented us with excellence at this prestigious competition. Die onderwerp was “Alle hoërskoolleerders moet ‘n plaaslike Afrika-taal aanleer (uitsluitend Afrikaans en Engels)”.
Die ATKV-debatkompetisie word jaarliks deur die Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV) aangebied. Top schools participate in this competition, and only ten teams per junior and senior age groups have the opportunity to participate in the national final. It is therefore a fantastic honour that the team fared as well.
Kom sluit by ons aan en leer waardevolle vaardighede – wat ook op universiteit (en daarna) van onskatbare waarde sal wees.
REDENAARS
Redevoering is ‘n aktiwiteit wat elke Stellenberg-leerder ongetwyfeld moet aangryp, veral om jou sê te sê, in Afrikaans. Om met selfvertroue, voor ’n gehoor, jou standpunt te verwoord, is ’n kuns wat hier geslyp word en ’n gawe wat Hoërskool Stellenberg koester en waardeer.
Toesprake word met kundige hulp ingeoefen wanneer leerders aan die afdeling: voorbereide toesprake deelneem. Hulp word ook met die voorbereiding van toesprake verleen. Tegnieke wat benodig word vir die skryf en strukturering van onvoorbereide toesprake word ook ingeoefen en hierdie sprekers ontvang spesialisafrigting.
Stellenberg Hoërskool het al in die verlede heelwat raakpraters opgelewer wat op provinsiale en nasionale vlak topprestatsies behaal het en eintlik as redevoeringlegendes in die redenaarsgemeenskap geken word. Ons neem aan kompetisies soos: die ATKV Redenaarskompetisie, Radikale Redenaars en Op die tong af, deel – asook by geleentheid aan die Con Spirito en Tygerberg Eisteddfod.

ROTARY DEBATING
Stellenberg High School participates in the Rotary Interschools Debating League, which is supported by the Western Cape Schools Debating Board as well as the UCT Debating Society. The competition allows us to enter one junior team (Grade 8 – 9) and one senior team (Grade 10 – 12) consisting of five speakers each.
The league has about 40 participating schools from the Northern and Southern Suburbs, affording our learners the opportunity to experience true diversity – in perspectives, ideals, contexts, and so much more. Learners who perform well can earn their school’s honorary colours and be chosen for the provincial or national team. Anyone looking to challenge themselves, broaden their horizons, improve their critical thinking and hone their reasoning skills do not have to look any further! The curious ones can join our practices at any time to see what it is all about.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Public Speaking is a cultural code that strengthens and improves the critical thinking skills, verbal eloquence and confidence with the guidance and support of expert coaches. At Stellenberg High school our talented orators receive wonderful opportunities to participate in a variety of Public Speaking competitions such as: Radical Public Speaking Competition, On the tip of your Tongue and the Eisteddfod. The top orators can go on to represent the school at regional and national level. Some of our alumni have received the honour of being the top orators in South Africa and abroad.
TOASTMASTERS

TOASTMASTERS
The focus for this cultural code is to improve and support learners’ public speaking skills. Although this club will endeavor to run throughout terms 1-3, in 2025, the school will host a specific program called the “Youth Leadership Program”. Facilitators from an existing Toastmasters club will run a workshop consisting of eight one- to two-hour sessions which will enable those between the ages of 14 and 18 to develop their communication and leadership skills through practical experience. This specific program will run over an extended period of time and will require a sign-up fee and commitment.
Learners who decide to participate will learn to:
- evaluate their own speaking ability
- prepare and deliver effective speeches
- give impromptu talks
- control their voice, vocabulary, and gestures
- give constructive feedback and more
Mrs Toua is the organiser of the program for 2025. More information will be provided early in the year – please keep an eye out for more details.
EISTEDDFOD
Hoof van Eisteddfod: Flavia Butner
Stellenberg Hoërskool is geaffiliëer by van die land se bekendste eisteddfodeau en ons neem jaarliks deel aan die Tygerberg Eisteddfod, die Con Spirito Eisteddfod asook die Stellenbosch Esiteddfod. Each year, the artistry of our learners will earn them stellar achievements, often including category winners and other prize winners.
TYGERBERG INTERNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD
Ons bied ons leerders die geleentheid om aan hierdie eisteddfod (die grootste in die land) deelte neem – en rig hulle ook daarvoor af.
We participate in the following sections: Dance (all genres), music (a variety of instruments), singing (different genres, as well as groups and choir), a selection of genre items or categories in Afrikaans/English/isiXhosa theatre; Afrikaans and English creative writing, Public Speaking, and Photography.

CON SPIRITO
Ons skryf ons leerders vir hierdie Eisteddfod in: drama-items, kreatiewe skryfwerk asookopenbare redevoering. This competition caters for English and Afrikaans speaking learners.
SMK – Die Stellenberg Meisiekoor
Lead by André van der Merwe
The choir consists of around 80 young ladies (Grade 8 to Grade 12) from Stellenberg High School. They have a deep, soulful passion for music and the voices of angels, hence they are fondly referred to as: the “Stellies Angels”.
SMK is in 1997 gestig en is steeds onder die bekwame leiding van André van der Merwe. Die Stellenberg Meisiekoor het, sedert die koor se bestaan, al talle ongelooflike prestasies behaal wat vele nasionale en internasionale toekennings insluit.
’n Besliste hoogtepunt sluit die toekenning as Choir of the World by die Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod 2001 in. 2024 is ook ’n uiters spesiale jaar, want SMK het hierdie jaar dit reggekry om die ATKV-Applouskoorkompetisie vir die twintigse keer te wen. ATKV Applous is ’n nasionale koorkompetisie wat dus beteken dat Hoërskool Stellenberg se meisiekoor in sy 24-jaarlange bestaan al 20 keer as Suid Afrika se beste meisiekoor bekroon is.
At the Tygerberg Eisteddfod Choir Gala Concert, held at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch this year, SMK performed magnificently and was crowned as the best high school choir.
Die uitmundende koorsang by die Hoërskool Stellenberg bly deel van die bloed wat deur ons Stellies Angels se are pomp. Trofees, toekennings en cum laude-sertifikate ten spyt, dit bly die vreugde van koorsang, die voorreg om musiek saam met vriende te beoefen, en die ongelooflike spanwerk wat elke SMK-koorlid se optredes so spesiaal maak.
Awards
He has received several national awards and prizes as actor and director. Currently André is the conductor of four choirs, namely:
Stellenberg Girls Choir (since 1999)
Stellenbosch University Choir (since 2003)
Stellenberg Boys Choirs (since 2015)
Voces Cordis (since 2022)
SMK and USC have achieved numerous national and international acclaim.
